Mardi Gras all started back in the early 1700's. The French of New Orleans were holding elaborate balls where guests were encouraged to wear a mask. But when the Spanish government took over, parties and street dancing were banned. It wasn't until 1827, when Americans were in power, that the right to party in mask was restored, and with this new found freedom, elite parties began resurfacing again. Easter is set to coincide with the first Sunday after the full moon that follows the Spring Equinox. Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 23 and April 25. Mardi Gras is then scheduled 47 days before Easter and can occur on any Tuesday from February 3 through March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar.
Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, is celebrated around the world but most famously in New Orleans' French Quarter. A Mardi Gras party celebration can include outrageous costumes, with masks, beads, and hats. When in New Orleans be sure to go to the parades. Have your own parade showing off the fun costumes at your celebration.
